Join us for a discussion on a groundbreaking initiative to expand hepatitis B and C prevention and care within Ghana’s prison system. This webinar will highlight a recent project led by the Hepatitis Foundation of Ghana, designed to improve access to hepatitis testing, vaccination, and linkage to care for incarcerated populations—a group often underserved in public health efforts. From June to August 2025, hepatitis B and C screening was conducted across four prison complexes in northern, central, and southern Ghana. Using rapid diagnostic tests on venous blood samples, the project assessed the prevalence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and hepatitis C antibody (anti-HCV) among inmates. In addition to screening, the initiative provided hepatitis B vaccination for non-infected and unvaccinated inmates and prison officers, while also delivering education to raise awareness and reduce transmission risk. During this webinar, Theobald Owusu-Ansah, Dr. Yvonne A. Nartey and Richard Nii Laryea will present key findings from the screening activities, discuss the implementation of vaccination and education efforts, and explore opportunities to strengthen hepatitis prevention and care within correctional settings in Ghana and beyond.
